Настоящее имя - Фрэнсис Гамм [Gumm, Frances]. Певица и актриса театра и кино. Пела в кабаре, выступала с концертами. Известность ей принесли роли в киносериале об Энди Харди: "Любовь находит Энди Харди" ["Love Finds Andy Hardy"] (1938) и "Энди Харди встречает дебютантку" ["Andy Hardy Meets Debutante"] (1940). Лучшие роли на Бродвее и в Голливуде сыграла в мюзиклах; среди наиболее известных фильмов: "Волшебник страны Оз" ["The Wizard of Oz" (Wizard of Oz)] (1939), "Девушка из шоу Зигфельда" ["Ziegfeld Girl"] (1941), "Встретимся в Сент-Луисе" ["Meet Me In St. Louis"] (1944), "Зигфельд Фоллиз" ["Ziegfeld Follies" (Ziegfeld Follies)] (1946), "Пират" ["The Pirate"] (1948), "Звезда родилась" ["A Star Is Born"] (1954). Драматический дар актрисы раскрылся в фильмах "Процесс в Нюрнберге" ["Judgement at Nuremberg"] (1961), "Ребенок ждет" ["A Child Is Waiting"] (1963), "Я бы пела и пела" ["I Could Go On Singing"] (1963). В 1939 удостоена специальной премии "Оскар" [Oscar]. Была замужем за режиссером и продюсером В. Миннелли [Minnelli, Vincente]. Свой музыкальный дар в полной мере передала дочери Л. Миннелли [Minnelli, Liza]
